Africa is the second largest continent in the world accounting for 14.8% of the world’s population. With a population of a billion, it is spread across in 61 territories and is the second most populous continent in the world.

The technology still needs to develop a lot in the territories of Africa. Time has drastically changed the situation in Africa. From being the pioneers in technology, now it is one of the backward continents in the world. Technical knowledge is a strong source to alleviate poverty and create wealth in Africa. It is just the lack of technical knowledge that creates a wide disparity between the rich and the poor nations. The gap just grows and never shrinks until nations take initiatives to update to the latest technologies.

Population hindering to growth of technology in Africa- The population growth in Africa is faster than the natural wealth and hence the quality of life cannot be maintained on nations like Nigeria. The new global economy of the 21^st century in Africa does not need a rigorous labor force instead the wealth of the future will be created largely by knowledge and technology.

The information age in Africa needs to grow. The internet opportunities make it possible for Africans to be employed by Americans. Africa can attract the high-tech companies by investing heavily in technical education and introducing a lot of computer courses with the aim of producing around a million scientist and engineers a year. However, recently there had been much development in the field of technology. This includes International Development of Computer Education (IDCE) program, a special initiative to expand computer education. (IDCE is registered as non-profit corporation in Cambridge).

Mobile Internet Growth- The no. of people using mobiles to access the internet had grown exponentially over the recent years. By the end of 2008, South Africa had 1.35 million Internet subscribers, of which, according to World Wide Worx, 794,000 were wireless Internet subscribers and 588,000 were ADSL subscribers (Balancing-Act Publication Issue 452). Similar patterns were observed in the rest of Africa. In order to leverage upon this opportunity, the mobile operators need to upgrade to the latest technology to allow greater data access. Many operators are upgrading their backhaul networks and separating the data using WiMax.

Technology in Agriculture- Africa is struggling with low agricultural yield compared to other parts of the world. The objective of the African government to reduce the poverty will never be accomplished with the existing technology in agriculture. Hence, African scientists have issued a stern warning to their governments to adopt modern technologies in agriculture or forgo their objective of reducing the poverty.

To sum it up, it is high time to bring some initiatives involving technology at a massive scale to improve the conditions in Africa.
